Broxbourne in Bloom 2009
In-Ex Garden Centre sponsors Broxbourne in Bloom, and last Wednesday (23 September,) we went to the presentation awards, at Broxbourne Civic Hall.
The idea of the competition is to make the borough look at its best and it is open to residents, businesses and schools.
Fairfields School
The happy winners were :
Fairfields School : for their conservation garden.
The John Warner School: for their vegetable plot.
Bonneygrove School: for their vegetable plot, potatoes and wildlife pond.
Sheredes School: for their courtyard garden
Holy Trinity School: for their new vegetable garden and the development of a conservation area.
Woodside School: for their new gazebo and conservation area.

The day started with a tea party for the schools’ finalists and children from five schools had lunch with the mayor of Broxbourne, Cllr Lyn White.

The mayor explained that Broxbourne in Bloom is part of Anglia in Bloom and that Broxbourne had been awarded a silver award the previous week.
After an impromptu sing-song, she awarded the winners certificates and hampers from In-Ex Garden Centre, containing bird-food, feeders and bulbs.

he mayor returned in the evening, for a reception with around 100 guests and prizes were awarded in numerous categories; including allotments, care-homes, pub gardens and best containers and gardens.
No-one seemed to leave empty-handed and the winners received certificates, cups and shields, as well as vouchers from In-Ex. The highlight was probably, 86-year-old Margaret Hillier and 96-year-old, Win West, who picked up the award for Grove House Retirement Home. A good-time was had by all.
